Off to the woodcarvers and a glimpse of traditional life

As much as it seems like this trip is one big shopping ordeal it has a few other activities thrown in. We headed out of Accra into the mountains to the town of Aqupon where the first missionary fled to get away from the Mosquitos and malaria in Accra. We did stop for a little buying time at the wood carvers coop. I was not interested in masks or statues but did succumb to a couple of wooden bowls. Enough said.

We had a tour of the town administrative offices and were welcomed with a taste of palm wine (not too bad, a hint of coconut and smoke) to the home of the tour guide.

We then had a demonstration of the preparation of foufou, a pounded paste of cooked cassava and plantains with a spicy stew poured over. We have had it with chicken, fish and goat.

This version with goat was the most delicious.

We dropped off our contributions to small clinic befriended by our tour organizer Lorna when she was the deputy mayor of West Orange, New Jersey.

We had lunch at a hilltop hotel with a beautiful view

And participated in a special welcoming ceremony with the local tribal elders. The "king" is the one in red, the queen mother is in green.
